Aubrey I you said,"because he thought they weren't loaded and safe." I think what you were trying to say is that he thought they weren't loaded and he also thought they were safe. Either way he knew they were loaded because it specifically says that he removed the ammo clip from the sniper rifle.
Jack's dad was shipped of to sea because he is in the navy. Jack was playing around with his fathers items. The reason to that is he enjoyed pretending that he was in the war.
Chiara F, the very first page states that Jack's dad was in Navy and is no longer in the Navy but afterwards went to the pacific island invasion. Jack was playing with his father's gun's thinking it was alright to pretend to shoot them.
