It actually said on page 94 that Jack good tell that the treatment was to expensive by the way his mother said "I see" and offered him pickles but he declined the offer.
The reason is because by the way Jacks mom said "I see" it was to expensive for her yet she could pay using work by offerinng jams and pickles.
I think that Jack's mom offered that is because the treatment is so expensive. But she would do anything to stop Jack's nose bleeds.
I think Jack's offered the food because she knew she didn't have the money for the treatment.
Maybe because he likes the fruits and pickles so she tried to bribe Mr Mertz because Jacks mom dosent have the money.
